The Student Experience

Legacy trip wouldn’t be a Legacy trip without our students.

During a mission, we don’t just work to care for populations that need it and educate them to help them take care of themselves, we also work to cultivate and inspire future medical and administrative leaders.

These are the people that we will pass the torch to in the future. Every organization is very intentional about have a succession plan and leadership pipeline.

The Legacy student experience is our leadership pipeline.”

IF YOU’RE A COLLEGE STUDENT AND SAID YES TO ANY OF THESE QUESTIONS, THEN A LEGACY TRIP WILL BE A GREAT MILESTONE IN YOUR EDUCATIONAL AND PROFESSIONAL JOURNEY.

The Legacy team believes in service, both the present and the future.

We believe that growing future humanitarian leaders is just as important as serving those presently in need.

Legacy doesn’t just mean honoring the past; it also means passing the torch to future caregivers.

Legacy prides itself in the full incorporation of students into mission operations.

Students will not be sitting idle. All Legacy resources are sacred.

The waste of such precious assets is not tolerated.

So, what would I be doing on a Legacy mission trip?

The available number and type of jobs varies with each mission trip and depends on the unique needs of each mission community.

However, there are certain student roles that need to be filled on every mission trip. Students will never find these opportunities and experiences in the states. Here are a few jobs:

Surgical Operations Assistant

Scrub into surgical procedures and provide surgical support to clinicians, including suturing and other surgical techniques.

No prior medical experience is necessary but priority will be given to students interested in pursuing a career in medicine or surgical nursing.

Clinic Pharmacy Operations Assistant

Collaborate with Legacy physicians and coordinate patient pharmacological care in Legacy clinics.

No prior medical experience is necessary, but priority will be given to students interested in pursuing a career in pharmacy.

Surgical Triage Translator

Assist in the coordination of the surgical intake operations and provide decision-support to surgical clinical leaders during the triage process.

The triage process involves examining candidates to determine which surgeries will be conducted, based on the level of urgency, resources available and the degree of long-term impact. Students must speak the appropriate native language.

No prior experience is necessary, but priority will be given to students interested in pursuing a career in nursing or healthcare administration.

Clinic Assistant & Translator

Assist with the logistics of clinic operations and partner with Legacy clinic physicians, dentists and nurses in the coordination of patient care and communication.

Students must speak the appropriate native language.

No prior experience is necessary, but priority will be given to students interested in pursuing a career in medicine, dentistry, nursing or healthcare administration.

Government, Vendor & Humanitarian Third-Party Liaison

Legacy often partners with other organizations during a mission trip.

These include local governments, other non-profit relief organizations and third-party vendors that assist with economic development projects like Legacy’s Clean Water Initiatives.

The student liaison is responsible for facilitating these conversations, ensuring that deadlines are met and that tasks are completed.

The liaison is also responsible for escalating urgent issues to Legacy leadership.

It is highly advantageous if the student can speak the native language.

No prior experience is necessary, but priority will be given to students interested in pursuing a career in healthcare administration or non-profit administration.

Basic Hygiene Educator

Basic hygiene knowledge is severely lacking in many developing countries.

The Educator will partner with the Legacy Art & Media team to execute various education initiatives, including puppet shows, videos, skits, games and other forms of interactive education.

No prior experience is necessary but it is highly advantageous if the student can speak the native language.
